Children's Rights

The CRC

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was passed on November 20th 1989. It was ratified by all states except the USA and Somalia. It is the first worldwide, cross-national treaty which deals solely with child protection. The focus is on the child as a person with fundamental rights which need protecting and not just an ‘object’ of protection as has been the case until now.

This juristic approach has made a long-term change to the perception and status of the child within society. However, the children’s rights stated in the CRC are still not respected everywhere. Particularly in Africa today, daily life for millions of children includes government despotism, repression, violence, sexual abuse, exploitation, starvation, a struggle for survival, no access to health services or basic education and social exclusion.

KiRA
is committed to the children of Africa and campaigns for the implementation of their basic rights based on the CRC.
